How to play Farflung

Farflung is a free daily geography game. Each day’s game is called an expedition. Answer five prompts by placing one pin on a country for each. Rarer correct answers take you further.

Play the Farflung geography game at farflung.cc, the official home of Farflung.

Your first five pins

  1. Read the prompt and think of a country that fits. There is no clock: take your time.
  2. Tap the map to place your pin. Tap again to move it. Scroll or pinch to zoom.
  3. Press Drop pin to lock in your answer. You get one answer per prompt.
  4. See how far your answer takes you, then press Next prompt. After the fifth pin, choose On to camp to see your results.

You can use the same country for more than one prompt, as long as it fits each one.

An example

Pin a country where German is an official language

Each of these countries is a correct answer. The less obvious choices take you further. A gem is a surprising answer with the top rarity, Farflung:

  1. Germany · Common. The answer many people think of first.
  2. Austria · Uncommon
  3. Liechtenstein · Rare
  4. Belgium · Elusive
  5. Luxembourg · Farflung. The gem. German is an official language alongside French and Luxembourgish.

This example is only for the guide. It does not appear in the daily game or practice.

How far an answer takes you

A correct answer adds distance in kilometres. Its rarity tells you how far it takes you: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Elusive or Farflung.

The answers people are least likely to think of take you furthest. Each prompt has at least one gem.

A wrong answer adds no distance.

After the fifth prompt you reach camp, which shows your total distance, every answer and facts about the countries. You can share your result from there.

Using the map

The map has no country labels. By default, it draws borders and shows the name of the country under your pin before you drop it.

If your pin is at sea or on disputed ground, move it onto a country before you drop it.

Want a harder game? Open Difficulty in the menu. You can turn off the country name under your pin, turn off borders or play against a 60-second clock. With the clock on, a pin you have placed on a country is dropped for you when time runs out, and if no pin is on land you get no distance.

A pin on a territory counts for the country it belongs to. For example, a pin on Greenland counts as Denmark, and a pin on Guam counts as the United States. Read the full rules on what counts.

Using a keyboard? Tab to the map. Use the arrow keys to pan, + and − to zoom, and Space or Enter to drop a pin you have placed.

Try a practice round

From the game’s home screen, open How to play in the menu, then choose Practice round. On your first visit, you can also choose How to play above the play button.

Practice has one prompt and no clock. You can try it as often as you like. Nothing is kept, and it does not use up your daily game.

Common questions

When is there a new game?

A new expedition opens at midnight in your local time. Everyone gets the same five prompts for that date.

Can I play the daily game again?

You get one try at each daily expedition. If you leave before finishing, you can return to continue it. If you play with the clock on, it keeps running on an open prompt while you are away, and if its time runs out while you are away, that prompt scores nothing. For another go without a daily score, use the practice round.

Is Farflung free? Do I need an account?

Farflung is free to play in your browser. You can play as a guest, with no account or download.
